The temperatures may have dropped but that doesn’t mean you should avoid going outdoors – especially when Plattsburgh and the surrounding area have so many fun winter activities to offer. From skiing at local resort Beartown to heading over to Lake Placid for some skating and dog sledding, check out this list of ways to get outdoors in the beautiful Adirondacks this winter.

Hit the slopes at nearby Beartown this winter. Just a short drive from Plattsburgh, Beartown offers skiing for people of all ages and levels. There are lighted trails for night skiing, six kilometres of cross country ski trails, half pipes, a t-bar, and even snow tubing. There is also a cozy lodge on-site for spectators or some apres-ski lunch. Beartown is open Friday to Sunday all winter long, and rates are extremely affordable at just $22 for a full day pass and $18 for a half day pass.

Just one hour from Plattsburgh lies the picturesque Mirror Lake in Lake Placid. Frozen during the winter, it is the perfect place to enjoy a dog sledding adventure. There are two companies that operate dog sled rides on Mirror Lake, Thunder Mountain Dog Sled Tours and Mike Arnold Dog Sled Rides. No matter which you go with, you’ll get to enjoy a cozy ride pulled by Alaskan huskies. Rides are available most weekends through the winter and are a great way to enjoy the scenic area.

Skate at the Olympic Oval this winter! Located in Lake Placid, this outdoor skating rink was once used as a speed skating rink by Olympic athletes. Today, it is open to the public. Whether you simply love ice skating or are dying to see where iconic skater Eric Heiden won five Olympic Gold Medals during the 1980 Winter Olympics, this is the place to be.

If you’re visiting Plattsburgh this winter, then you’ll want to book a room at the Best Western Plus Plattsburgh. We offer cozy accommodation, affordable rates, and a top-notch location in the heart of the Adirondacks.
